Jaehyuck Choi (b. 1994)
South Korean composer/conductor Jaehyuck Choi is a graduate of The Juilliard School and the 1st prize winner of the 72nd Concours de Genève Composition Prize. Choi quickly distinguished himself as one of the most prominent young composer and conductor of his generation.
Choi’s music is being actively performed in the United States, South Korea, as well as in Europe with the Ensemble InterContemporain, Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich, Dal Niente Ensemble, Zodiac Trio, Ditto Ensemble, TIMF Ensemble, etc., with commissions scheduled until 2021. Recently, his music was praised as “…much sense of expressivity, color, movement, motion, and a beautiful way of how to display energy” by Matthias Pintscher on Choi's Clarinet Concerto, Nocturne III (2017).
As a conductor, Choi made his international debut at the Lucerne Festival in 2018, conducting Stockhausen's <GRUPPEN> for three orchestras and three conductors with Sir Simon Rattle, Ducan Ward, and with the joint orchestra of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of the Lucerne Festival Academy.
Choi's Korean debut was made by conducting the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra in 2019, conducting works by Gounod, Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt.
Since 2015, Choi founded a contemporary ensemble, Ensemble Blank, in Korea which he leads both as composer and conductor in trending music scenes and venues in Korea.
Choi's instructors include Matthias Pintscher, Peter Eötvös, Unsuk Chin, Samuel Adler, Whitman Brown, and Jung-sun Park.
Jaehyuck, a lover of paintings, movies and driving, currently resides in New York and Seoul.
작곡가 겸 지휘자 최재혁은 2017년 제 72회 제네바 국제콩쿠르 작곡부문에서 심사위원 만장일치로 역대 최연소 1위를 하며 세계에 작곡가로서 이름을 알렸다.
2018년 여름에는 스위스 루체른 페스티벌에서 슈톡하우젠의 3 개의 오케스트라와 3 명의 지휘자를 위한 <GRUPPEN> 을 사이먼 래틀 경, 던칸 와드와 함께 런던 심포니 오케스트라와 루체른 페스티벌 아카데미 오케스트라를 지휘하며 국제무대에 데뷔를 헀으며 이듬해 한국의 부천필하모닉 오케스트라를 객원지휘하며 한국무대에서 또한 지휘자로서 입지를 굳혀가고 있다.
2009년부터 작곡을 공부한 최재혁은 과천중학교 재학 중 도미, 월넛 힐 예술고등학교 (Walnut Hill School for the Arts) 와 New England Conservatory 예비학교를 졸업했으며, 줄리어드 음악원 (The Juilliard School) 에서 작곡과 학사 (Samuel Adler, Matthias Pintscher) 를 마치고 현재 동대학원 석사과정을 (Matthias Pintscher) 밟고있다.
지휘에도 꿈이 있었던 최재혁은 2012년 서울시향의 진은숙 작곡가가 진행하던 마스터클래스에서 인연을 맺게 된 작곡가 겸 지휘자인 페터 외트뵈시 (Peter Eötvös) 의 초대로 그의 지휘 마스터클래스들에 참가하며 리게티, 슈톡하우젠, 크세나키스 등과 같은 음악을 Ensemble Linea, Ensemble InterContemporain 을 지휘하며 지휘에 입문했다.
또한 대학시절인 2015년부터 최재혁은 친구들과 함께 Ensemble Blank를 결성하여 동시대의 음악과 바로크 시대의 음악의 공연을 기획하고 지휘하고 있다.
미술, 영화, 아름다운 음식을 좋아하는 최재혁은 현재 서울과 뉴욕에 살고 있으며 내년 뉴욕이 아닌 어느 도시로 이사를 가야할지 고민중이다.
